Parties, School Prep Lead Events Lineup This Week in McKinley Park

Ida y Vuelta band leadCowboy Choir performs on Sunday, August 11, at the McKinley Park Farmers Market.Get ready to party this Saturday, August 10, for a double lineup of outdoor neighborhood fetes. The Blessed Sacrament Parish Summer Fiesta brings food, games and amusements to the 3500 block of South Hermitage Avenue, hearkening back to the days of the parish's block-long neighborhood carnival. A couple blocks further north, on the 3300 block of South Wood Street, The Shutdown 4 BBQ Block Party kicks off a full day of DJs, grilling and amusements starting at noon.

Free school supplies and immunizations are on-hand at the Back to School Health Fair on Saturday, August 10. Sponsored by 12th Ward Alderman George Cardenas, the fair runs from 9 a.m. to noon in the McKinley Park field house.

Neighbors for Environmental Justice hosts its Community Update & Call to Action Meeting on Monday, August 5, at the National Latino Education Institute. At the meeting, the local collective of advocates will present updates on its campaign against MAT Asphalt, information on municipal resources and data from its air monitoring campaign.

Befriend a Bug teaches kids and adults all about our local insect population and what they bring to our environment and homes. Catch and identify bugs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6, in the fields and natural areas of McKinley Park.

McKinley Park Farmers Market bocce ball posterBocce Ball and other lawn games are ready for players at the McKinley Park Farmers Market.Begin your McKinley Park Farmers Market journey early on Sunday, August 11, with one of the Bird Walks sponsored by the Chicago Audubon Society. The Farmers Market Concert: Cowboy Choir showcases local country swing talent starting at noon, with Bocce Ball and other lawn games joining the fresh local foods and goods of the market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stretch out with Yoga at the Farmers Market starting at 10 a.m.

The Cinderella Film Screening on Saturday, August 9, caps a great set of weekly events hosted by the McKinley Park branch of the Chicago Public Library. Stick around that day for Drop-In Games all afternoon long. 

LEGO at the Library on Tuesday, August 6, and sTEAM Players on Wednesday, August 7, keep the focus on core science and engineering skills. Kids @ Play and Team Tween on Thursday, August 8, offer socializing and great fun for young people in different age groups at the McKinley Park library.

Stalwart resident performers return on Wednesday, August 7, for Jazz on Marz with the Jazzeros at Marz Community Brewing Company. The Marz tap room hosts Karaoke on Marz the next night, Thursday, August 8.

Karaoke fans can keep crooning on Friday, August 9, at One City Tap's Karaoke Night. Put on your boogies shoes on Saturday, August 10, for One City Tap's Sabado Gigante, a dance party running until close.

The Omega Delta Rummage Sale on Saturday, August 10, at Hoyne Park offers local goods to shoppers while supporting the Omega Delta Youth Baseball and Softball League.
