Aquinas Literacy Center continued its ongoing program of language education with the training of 17 new volunteer tutors, who will work one-on-one with local learners who wish to speak, read and write English.
Over the past weekend, Aquinas conducted its first training session of the academic season, instructing and certifying the volunteers during its standing schedule of a training workshop over a Friday night and Saturday day.
"Without the support of many volunteers, Aquinas would not be able to carry out its mission of empowering adults to learn English and become more engaged in their community," said Sabrina Poulin, volunteer coordinator at Aquinas.
The extremely active and in-demand English language training program at Aquinas pairs trained tutors with an English language learner for 90 minutes per week. All instruction takes place at the center, located at West 35th Street and South Wood Street in the McKinley Park neighborhood. Knowledge of a second language is not required, Poulin said: All instruction takes place in English.
"More volunteer tutors are always needed," Poulin said. "Right now, there is a waiting list of over 45 students." During its past year, Aquinas has trained more than 65 new tutors, she said.
The next English Literacy Tutor Training takes place on Friday, October 18, and Saturday, October 19. Poulin said that any interested community members should reach out to sign up by calling her at (773) 927-0512 or sending email to sabrina@aquinasliteracycenter.org.
