Aquinas Literacy Center started in 1996 in the basement of the convent at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church by the Adrian Dominican Sisters in response to the increased need for English-language literacy instruction in the McKinley Park community. Under the leadership of Sister Claudia Hinds, O.P. and Sister Rosemary Brennan, O.P., with the support of the Adrian Dominican Sisters, the Aquinas Literacy Center opened its doors and began simply, with two tables and five chairs.

Twenty years later, the need for English-language instruction continues to grow. Through one-on-one tutoring, supported with conversation classes, writing workshops, book clubs, computer learning opportunities and job assistance workshops, learners are able to improve their English-language literacy and achieve their personal goals. In 2015-2016, 150 volunteer tutors instructed 170 adult learners, with support from three staff members.
