Aquinas Literacy Center in Chicago’s McKinley Park neighborhood continued adding to its corps of volunteer language tutors, who first receive training and then work one-on-one with adult students to teach them English.
“Without the support of many volunteers, Aquinas would not be able to carry out its mission of empowering adults to learn English and become more engaged in their community,” said Sabrina Poulin, the associate director at Aquinas.
Demand for the free program remains very strong, Poulin said. “ Currently there are over 25 adult students on the wait list.”
New tutors from the May 2024 training session include, from left to right, Luke Stees, Eve Danner-Lentz, Veronica Eman, Deborah Wolen and Steve Cohn.
Aquinas trained two sets of tutors during daylong training sessions on Friday, March 8, and Saturday, April 20, 2024. This resulted in a total of 14 new tutors ready to work with students for about 90 minutes each week on their language instruction.
The volunteer tutors work individually with adult students, many of whom are immigrants new to the U.S. looking to learn English. Sessions can take place at Aquinas Literacy Center at 1751 W. 35th St., Chicago, and online learning is also supported.
Next Training On June 1
All instruction is in English, and knowledge of a second language is not required, Poulin said.
She invited anyone interested to sign up for the next English Literacy Tutor Training session at Aquinas, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2024.
