Volunteer Tutors Train to Teach at In-Demand Literacy Program

Published February 12, 2020

A group of 14 volunteers jumped into a growing corps of literacy tutors after completing their recent training at Aquinas Literacy Center, a McKinley Park neighborhood-based non-profit that teaches English to immigrants and other language learners. The trainees are now ready to tutor new students in the program, which continues to be in very high demand, said Volunteer Coordinator Sabrina Poulin.

“Aquinas Literacy Center still needs tutors because there are over 40 students waiting to be matched with an English tutor,” Poulin said. To continue to meet this demand, the center is hosting its next two-day English Literacy Tutor Training session on Friday and Saturday, March 13-14, she said.

Once through the training, tutors work one-on-one for 90 minutes per week with an adult individual who is seeking to learn English. No knowledge of any foreign language is required to be a tutor, all of whom receive certification and a ProLiteracy membership after completing their training.

“Without the support of many volunteers, Aquinas would not be able to carry out its mission of empowering adults to learn English and become more engaged in their community,” Poulin said. “Aquinas Literacy Center ... knows the value that volunteer tutors bring to our organization.”
