The Aquinas Literacy Center in Chicago's McKinley Park neighborhood celebrated the successful training and graduation of eight new and returning tutors who join the all-volunteer corps helping adults — including many new immigrants — learn English.

"Without the support of many volunteers, Aquinas would not be able to carry out its mission of empowering adults to learn English and become more engaged in their community," said Sabrina Poulin, the literacy center's associate director.

After graduating through the training program, tutors are ready for 90 minutes per week of one-on-one training with English language students at the center, at 1751 W. 35th St., Chicago.

All training is conducted in English, and knowledge of a second language is not required, Poulin said.

"Currently there are still many adult students on the wait list for English tutors," Poulin said.

The group of new and returning volunteer tutors who trained and graduated on Saturday, September 13, 2025, include Jessi Beck, Tom Dankers, Tamara Earley, Lynn Nelson, Enrique Nieto, Terri Quinones, Dan Reynolds and Lester Wright.

Those interested in volunteering can reach out to the literacy center by calling (773) 927-0512 or sending email to sabrina@aquinasliteracycenter.org.

"Please consider becoming a volunteer English literacy tutor," Poulin said. "Volunteer tutors are needed."
