Facing intense demand for more help teaching English learners, the Aquinas Literacy Center in Chicago's McKinley Park neighborhood announced the growth of its trained volunteers by six new tutors.
Joining the Aquinas program are Rishi Chopra, Ashley Kim, Erin Kirk, Tony Thompson, Yanina Villagomez and Joey Washburn, who completed the Aquinas tutor training and onboarding program held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
These new tutors are each now ready to be paired with an adult English learner for free one-on-one training at the center, located at 1751 W. 35th St., Chicago, said Program Manager Lori Rohde.
English-Learning Mission
"Without the support of many volunteers, Aquinas would not be able to carry out its mission of empowering adults to learn English and become more engaged in their community," Rohde said.
Tutors and students meet for 90 minutes each week, and learners also engage through the center's literacy resources, computer workstations and online programs. All training is conducted in English, and tutors do not need knowledge of another language.
Next Training April 25
"Currently there are still many adult students on the wait list for English tutors," Rohde said.
The next English Literacy Tutor Training takes place on Saturday, April 25, 2026.
Rohde said anyone interested should contact her by emailing lori@aquinasliteracycenter.org or calling (773) 927-0512.
"Please consider becoming a volunteer English literacy tutor," she said.
