Six new tutors joined the volunteer cadre at the McKinley Park neighborhood's Aquinas Literacy Center, completing a training process that has them ready for one-on-one teaching of adult English language learners.
Patrick Cavanaugh, Emily Eggleston, Linda Gonzalez, Lauren Hoh, Aldo Pacini and Alanisse Pineda trained to become tutors on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at the center, 1751 W. 35th St., Chicago.
They are now ready to meet weekly for 90 minutes with English learners enrolled in the literacy program at Aquinas, said Program Coordinator Wendy Salto.
A Second Language
The programs at Aquinas "address the critical societal need of adult education in English as a second language," Salto said.
"Without the support of many volunteers, Aquinas would not be able to carry out its mission of empowering adults to learn English and become more engaged in their community," she said.
Wait List
Even with these new volunteers joining others at Aquinas, demand outpaces resources for the popular literacy program.
"Currently there are still many adult students on the wait list for English tutors," Salto said. "Please consider becoming a volunteer English literacy tutor."

Knowledge of a second language is not required, Salto said, and all instruction is in English.
