Program Coordinator – Remote Learning
Job Description

Mission: Responding to a critical societal need, Aquinas Literacy Center empowers adults by providing English as a Second Language instruction through individualized tutoring in an environment that respects and reverences individuals. We enable learners to transform their lives by acquiring skills to become successful parents, productive workers and responsible citizens.

History: Aquinas Literacy Center (ALC) is a community-based organization located in McKinley Park on the southwest side of Chicago. Since 1996, ALC has served the immigrant community by offering free individualized instruction in the English language. Using trained, volunteer tutors, Aquinas serves over 200 learners annually. Learners participate in weekly tutoring sessions, conversation groups, writing workshops, book clubs, computer-based instruction and computer literacy workshops. ALC is sponsored by the Adrian Dominican Sisters.

Accountable To: The Program Coordinator for Remote Learning reports to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities of the Program Coordinator for Remote Learning:
  • Coordinates one-on-one and small group virtual learning;
  • With the guidance from the Associate Director, places learners with individual tutors and recommends learners for small group classes;
  • Schedules the registration of prospective learners; assesses needs and abilities; prescribes instructional methods and materials; provides referral materials as needed;
  • Schedules and administers assessments to learners;
  • Offers program and technical support to all virtual learning tutors, small group facilitators and learners;
  • Supports substitute tutors and small group facilitators:
  • Coordinates electronic resources; shares instructional resources with tutors;
  • Prepares certificates for learners reaching milestones;
  • Participates in initial and on-going tutor training;
  • Based on program needs, develops a comprehensive listing of online language learning resources;
  • Oversees audio learning programs;
  • Initiates a computer literacy program;
  • Maintains records and statistical information for grant reporting;
  • Develops online and print materials in various languages;
  • Assists with day-to-day operations; and
  • Provides administrative support to the Associate Director and Executive Director.

  • Work on-site for 25 hours per week, maintaining a set schedule as well as being available for additional/flexible hours when needed. Work hours include daytime, evening and occasional weekend hours.
  • Has three or more years of experience in online education.
  • Must have experience in adult education (ESL).
  • Has exceptional computer skills.
  • Must be fluent in spoken and written English, and have knowledge of Spanish and/or Mandarin or Cantonese.
