The State of Illinois has released its report cards for neighborhood schools, including for Horizon Science Academy at 2245 W. Pershing Road. The school, which educates kindergarteners through high schoolers, showed a mix of performance results, with one bright spot being mathematics performance for elementary students.
As previously reported, state report cards showed other neighborhood schools facing significant challenges while realizing some gains. The situation is similar at Horizon, which has a student body mostly made up of low-income students, about a quarter of whom have limited English proficiency.
The report cards include a grade-by-grade breakdown of performance on the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) test, which uses Common Core standards to test third through eighth graders in reading and math. Performance on the SAT was the benchmark for high schoolers' performance.
Mathematics for third through sixth graders was around or above statewide levels, with English performance experiencing highs and lows. In particular, the fourth grade class blew the doors off the testing, significantly outperforming statewide standards for both English and math.
Horizon middle schoolers and high schoolers did not fare as well, with PARCC numbers below state averages, and 11th graders performance on the SAT falling below state averages for English and math.
Some information on Horizon isn't available as it is with other neighborhood school report cards: Unlike these schools, Horizon is not a part of the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) district. Instead, it was founded in 2013 under the auspices of the Illinois State Charter School Commission.
